Ẹyo Otọ
Ẹyo Otọ is a foundational research space that presents historic Benin objects through their correct Edo designations, forming object groups that differ from classifications used by institutions outside Nigeria. Drawing on data from holding institutions, it reorganises objects according to Edo knowledge systems and makes them accessible through visual, written and spoken forms, including vocalised designations. Ẹyo Otọ addresses gaps in existing institutional data by foregrounding Edo language and perspectives, establishing a basis for future research rooted in Edo cultural knowledge.
Digital Benin collates digital material from institutions, and some of this material is inherently colonial and contains words, terms and phrases that are inaccurate, derogatory and harmful towards African and African diasporic communities. Catalogue transcriptions, book titles, exhibition titles and museum titles may contain harmful terms.
