Akpa
Akpa, or moulds, such as those grouped here were part of sets of casting materials collected by ethnographers in the twentieth century to demonstrate the casting process. They show the stage following the creation of wax models. A clay investment would be applied over the wax model, which would then be allowed to dry before being fired, allowing the wax to melt out and leaving a hollow cavity. It is this cavity that would be filled with molten brass.
