Label Text (deu) | Henkelkrug nach europäischem Vorbild Unbekannte Werkstatt der Bronzegießergilde Igun Eronmwon / Königreich Benin, Nigeria, 16./17. Jh. / Gelbguss / Ankauf vom Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, 1899, Inv. Nr. C 2435 Das Gefäß ist in einem Guss gefertigt, der Deckel ist wohl im Zuge des Transfers verloren gegangen. Es handelt sich vermutlich um die Nachahmung eines europäischen Steingutkrugs mit Zinndeckel. Manche der am Königshof verwendeten prestigeträchtigen Metallgefäße wurden nach fremden Vorbildern hergestellt. Vor allem ab dem 17. Jh. gelangten Pfannen, Eimer, Schüsseln und Behälter verschiedenster Form und Funktion als Handelsgüter und Geschenke nach Benin, die lokale Künstler inspirierten. |
Label Text (eng) | European Style Vessel Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass/ Acquired from the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, 1899, Inv. no. C 2435 The vessel has been cast in one piece, its lid was probably lost in the course of transfer. Apparently, it is an imitation of a European earthenware jug with a pewter lid. A number of the prestigious metal vessels used at the royal court were crafted after foreign models. Especially from the 17th century onwards, pans, buckets, bowls and containers of various shapes and functions arrived in Benin as trade goods and gifts, inspiring local artists. |
