INTERNETKOMMENTAR description notes | Die Arm-Manschette ist Bestandteil des kulturellen und künstlerischen Erbe des vermutlich 800jährigen Königreiches von Benin. Das Königreich, welches auf dem Gebiet des heutigen südwestlichen Nigeria gelegen hat, wurde 1897 von den Briten erobert und die höfischen Kunstwerke gelangten als Kriegsbeute nach Europa.Arm-Manschetten aus Elfenbein waren Bestandteil der Festkleidung des Oba Benins. Die doppelwandige, aus einem Stück geschnitzte Manschette, sticht besonders durch ihre Zusammensetzung aus zwei ineinandergreifenden durchbrochenen Zylindern heraus. Beide Zylinder weisen eine figürliche, wie auch ornamentale Verzierung auf. Der innere Hohlkörper ist dabei mit zwei erhabenen Medaillons versehen, die den äußeren an zwei Aussparungen durchbrechen, so dass ein Verschieben der beiden Teile verhindert wird. Das Motiv der Medaillons stellt eine symbolische Darstellung des Oba mit „Fischbeinen“ dar. Ergänzt wird der Oba durch zwei Begleiter und weiteren mythischen Figuren. Hochwertige Elfenbeinschnitzereien sind seit Jahrhunderten auch aus dem Yoruba-Gebiet von Owo bekannt. Die Komposition der Muster zwischen den Medaillons weist einen starken Yoruba-Einfluss auf, eine Fertigung außerhalb Benins ist nicht ausgeschlossen. |
